painting of a woman enjoying painting by Cézanne
acrylic on panel (masonite)
8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm
In his mid-fifties and at the height of his career, Cézanne began a series of paintings, drawings, and watercolors of card players. Cézanne referred to this series as 'souvenirs of the museums', as they were steeped in art historical references to paintings by past European masters. Painting a woman enjoying this piece in a museum adds another layer to these references.
I create small studies like this in preparation for a finished piece or just as visual notes. I often use my small studies to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition. These small studies are exclusively available through my shop and blog. All studies are signed on the reverse.
