painting of a man enjoying painting by Pablo Picasso
acrylic on panel (masonite)
8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm
Guernica is probably Picasso's most famous work and certainly his most powerful political statement. He painted it as an immediate reaction to the Nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during Spanish Civil War.
Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace.
I create small studies like this in preparation for a finished piece or just as visual notes. I often use my small studies to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition. These small studies are exclusively available through my shop and blog. All studies are signed on the reverse.
